Set expectations

It's important to communicate openly and honestly with your partner throughout the renovation process and to establish clear expectations from the outset. This can help to minimize misunderstandings and prevent any unnecessary conflicts. For example, talk through what you both envision at the end of the renovation, how much you expect to budget, and talk about ways your life may be disrupted during and how you will handle it. It is also important to discuss who is in charge of which decisions. Will you handle every decision together or will you divide and conquer? It can also help to put days on the calendar during the renovation to sit down and talk about what is working and what is not without judgment! Clear expectations and check-ins can do wonders during a renovation. 

Expect Disagreements to occur

Reworking some of the most valued rooms in your house is bound to bring out strong opinions and perspectives. Expecting disagreements and differing ideas to occur can keep you both from being on the offensive and instead orient you to solving differences together. By working together as a team, respecting each other's opinions and needs, and remaining patient and understanding, you can successfully navigate the challenges of renovating while preserving your relationship.
