trends on their way out

The world of home design and remodeling is ever-changing. What was once trendy and popular may now be outdated and unappealing. If you are planning a remodel, being aware of current trends on their way out can help inform your design choices. Preference also plays a role. Even if a trend is on its way out if it speaks to you and will serve you long-term, go for it! If selling your home is on the horizon, it might be a more vital consideration.

Here are some trends headed out the door:

Industrial aesthetic

Harsh lines and warehouse vibes were once a favorite for homeowners wanting a modern look. In 2024 we are seeing a trend towards a design style that brings a connection with nature to the inside; creating spaces that welcome elements of the outdoors inside as well as spaces that naturally flow to the outdoors.

Unused design elements

Homeowners in the DC metro area are no strangers to limited space. Making a renovated space multifunctional and incorporating design elements that work for you is the way of the future. In fact, according to the 2023 U.S. Houzz Kitchen Trends Study, 3 out of 5 homeowners (57%) use their kitchen for entertaining following a renovation. In the same vein, there is a trend towards making designs and decor eco-friendly. Repurposing materials, including greenery, and upgrading to energy-efficient options are all the ways of the future.

 All white and gloomy interiors

While all-white is thought to age well, in 2024 it is the new drab. Connection to nature brings warmth and disperses sterility, and so does color! Many of Houzz’s design trends of 2024 point to color and texture. Go warm and expressive to infuse character and feeling into your home.

Gold Fixtures

While shiny gold fixtures were once a sign of luxury and sophistication, they are once again overshadowed by a classic! Replace them with brushed nickel, brushed gold or chrome fixtures, which are more modern and timeless.

 Closed Floor Plans

Open floor plans are now the norm, as they allow for more natural light, better flow, and a more spacious feel. If your home has a closed floor plan, consider opening up the space by removing walls or creating large openings- arched openings are an elevated style option.
